Holiday Tips
Aaaa, Henley. The town I learned how to live in Britain. Have been living there for almost 4 years now (2010) and I must say that I love this town. It is posh but not in a bad way. Some times people come here thinking they should be arrogant towards the people who aren't dressed as such, but those aren't people from Henley. Here you will find warmth and will be welcomed by the various fancy pubs and restaurants close to the river.
The Thames is clean and there are lots of boats to rent. It is a family place and walking by the river elevates your heart to the heights. Up the hill behind the town hall you will see the house of George Harrison (or just a part of it) and the Nepalese restaurant owner from Reading Road will be happy telling you stories from when Ravi Shankar would come to eat there, 20 years ago (maybe less, not sure).
In July there is the Royal Regatta, a nice rowing competition that gathers together many countries athletes and lots and lots of people come for partying. During the night it can get a bit rough because everyone, from 16 to 60, are drunk. All fancy dressed, pretending to be posh to maybe get a husband or a wife from the high society, but at night the demons come alive. Normal thing I would say, and it is part of the tale. It is worth coming by for good day out with the family.
Take a look at some picture Nelson Toledo had taken here.
Accommodation
- There are lots of hotels around, but Twiford and Reading are cheaper and minutes away.
Recommendations
- The Hotel Du Vin has an extensive menu of whiskeys, wines and cigars. Worth spending some time there and the servers are smiley and nice.
Language Tips
- If you go to the Victoria pub behind the Town Hall maybe is better to learn some Cockney...
